Chapter 8 - Christine

The rest of the Marketing Superstars event went by in a blur. Christine and Greg moved from group to group throughout the night, arm-in-arm, talking about her business. Before long, they were talking about their relationship almost as if it were real, and the way Greg winked and looked at her with those deep green eyes made butterflies flutter in her belly.

It had to be the alcohol. She wasn’t drunk by any standards, but she’d certainly had a little more than usual in an attempt to battle her nervousness. She hadn't initially wanted to bring Greg to the event, but now that they had been together for a few hours, she almost couldn't imagine not being there with him. The alcohol was the only answer. Why else would she suddenly enjoy his company so much?

Even with her mind working overtime to justify how she felt in that ballroom, she couldn't ignore how Greg had been true to his word. He'd told her at the beginning of the night that he wouldn't talk about anything he had no knowledge about. Instead, Greg had been attentive to her every word, picking up every little detail she told people about her business and jumping in whenever it was appropriate. His memory and enthusiasm were impressive, so much so that there were times that Christine almost believed he was just as invested in her business as she was. But that was a ridiculous thought, wasn't it? After all, they'd only just met, and before tonight, besides the dating tips he'd given to Mark at the radio station, he'd shown no interest in the business of relationships at all.

"Babe, are you alright?"

Christine blinked at the sound of Greg's voice, pulling her from her thoughts. "Yeah, I guess I'm just getting tired," she said. "It's been a long night."

He wrapped an arm around her waist, and her skin tingled where he touched, her heart quickening. "Maybe we should head home?" he said.

Her eyes widened at the idea of leaving already. She needed to talk to more people, get to know everyone, make more contacts! There was still half a room full of people she'd yet to meet. It couldn't even be that late yet. She opened her mouth to protest but had to stifle a yawn instead.

"It's almost eleven," Greg chuckled. "You’ve worked hard all night. I'm sure you're exhausted."

Christine blinked again, her head spinning. She was tired. A lot sleepier than she thought. For a while, being here at the event and meeting and talking to people had filled her with energy, but that buoyancy was starting to fade. Even if she felt a little guilty for leaving now, she had achieved more than she'd imagined in a mere five hours. Meeting Kaia alone and getting her contact information was worth the whole night, and she'd met so many other lovely people that her purse was practically stuffed with business cards.

She smiled lazily. "Yeah, maybe you’re right. Let's go home."
